Software Engineer II - Blockchain

Overview:
Mastercard is looking for a talented Software Engineer II - Blockchain to join the Mastercard Blockchain and Digital Assets Engineering team. In this role, you will be part of a highly collaborative Agile team building innovative, scalable products leveraging blockchain technologies and components for global markets.
You will work alongside experienced engineers to design, develop, test, and support Ethereum/EVM and Web3 solutions, contributing to enterprise-grade applications with a focus on scalability, security, reliability, and performance.
Our team is built on a foundation of research and development, innovation mentality, thinking through new product lines using Blockchain / Distributed ledger technology, managing new products from inception to market validation and engaging strategically with start-ups to shape the future of commerce within the digital assets space with and for our customers. At Mastercard you will help architect and lead the future of commerce globally.
This team will have a major focus on adopting Blockchain technology to bring innovative payment solutions to market. Engineers on this team will also have the opportunity to work alongside cutting-edge AI tools and agentic systems as part of our broader innovation agenda.
This is a hybrid role based in Arlington, VA, requiring three days per week onsite.

Role:
• Develop, test, deploy, and maintain blockchain applications, smart contracts, and Web3 integrations within the Ethereum/EVM ecosystem.
• Collaborate with senior engineers, architects, and product teams to deliver secure, scalable, and reliable solutions.
• Participate in technical design discussions and contribute ideas to address business and technical challenges.
• Translate business requirements into high-quality code aligned with engineering standards and best practices.
• Participate in code reviews, testing activities, and development processes to ensure software quality and maintainability.
• Work closely with product, compliance, security, and engineering teams throughout the software development lifecycle.
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues in development, test, and production environments.
• Contribute to improving engineering processes, automation, tooling, and development practices.
• Develop and support applications running in cloud-native, containerized environments.
• Follow secure coding practices and operational excellence standards throughout development and delivery.

All About You:
• Experience as a Software Engineer, Software Developer, or similar engineering role.
• Experience developing applications using Ethereum/EVM and Web3 technologies such as ethers.js, web3.js, or similar frameworks.
• Working knowledge of Solidity and experience developing or maintaining smart contracts.
• Understanding of blockchain fundamentals, including transactions, wallets, gas concepts, and common security considerations.
• Familiarity with smart contract development frameworks such as Hardhat, Foundry, or similar toolchains.
• Knowledge of software engineering principles, object-oriented programming, and modern development practices.
• Experience with programming languages such as Java, TypeScript, JavaScript, or similar technologies.
• Familiarity with source control systems such as Git and collaborative software development practices.
• Experience building or maintaining automated unit and integration tests.
• Exposure to containerization technologies such as Docker and cloud-native development concepts.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automation tools.
• Ability to learn new technologies quickly and contribute effectively in a fast-paced Agile environment.
• Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
• Commitment to code quality, maintainability, security, and continuous improvement.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with enterprise blockchain platforms such as Hyperledger Besu, Quorum, or Canton.
• Familiarity with Layer 2 scaling technologies, including Polygon, Arbitrum, or Optimism.
• Knowledge of smart contract security practices and common vulnerability patterns.
• Familiarity with non-EVM blockchain ecosystems such as Solana.
• Experience with Java and frameworks such as Spring or Spring Boot.
• Familiarity with TypeScript and frontend frameworks such as React or Angular.
• Exposure to AI-powered developer tools, LLM integrations, or agentic development frameworks.
• Experience developing applications in cloud environments such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.

In line with Mastercard’s total compensation philosophy and assuming that the job will be performed in the US, the successful candidate will be offered a competitive base salary and may be eligible for an annual bonus or commissions depending on the role. The base salary offered may vary depending on multiple factors, including but not limited to location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay Ranges

Arlington, Virginia: $106,000 - $169,000 USD
