Senior Advisor, Operational Risk, Property and Casualty Insurance

As a senior operational risk advisor for the second line of defence, you act as a preferred strategic partner representing the P&C insurance sector. You provide added value thanks to your in-depth expertise in the P&C insurance sector, as well as your ability to monitor, challenge and establish guidelines for non-financial risks, with a view to creating value and ensuring the long-term viability of business activities. Recognized as a point of reference in property and casualty insurance, you have an in-depth understanding of the various products, processes, regulatory issues and operational risks specific to this sector (underwriting, pricing, claims, distribution, member/client experience, digital transformation, suppliers, etc.). You use this knowledge to make informed decisions that are consistent and aligned with risk management best practices. You play a leadership role within the second line of defence by taking autonomous charge of complex files related to managing the operational risks encountered in property and casualty insurance. As a reference in your field, you ensure rigorous monitoring of the risk categories assigned to you by developing an in-depth understanding of the sector’s trends, vulnerabilities, and emerging issues. You also participate in the independent review of large-scale projects and initiatives to properly assess the associated risks and support informed decision-making. Your ability to explain complex property and casualty insurance issues at the executive level is an important part of your role. You work closely with the risk officer and all risk management partners to contribute to a consistent and integrated vision of the sector’s issues and to support informed decision-making. More specifically, you will be required to :

• Monitor, analyze, and track risks in the property and casualty insurance sector by assessing their evolution, potential impacts, and the effectiveness of the mitigation measures in place.
• Develop and maintain a deep understanding of emerging issues, industry trends, and risks specific to property and casualty insurance in order to guide the interventions of the second line of defence.
• Conduct objective and independent reviews of large-scale projects, programs, and initiatives to assess associated non-financial risks and formulate recommendations to promote sound and prudent risk management.
• Maintain ongoing business dialogue with collaborators in the property and casualty insurance sector to support teams in identifying, assessing and proactively managing risks.
• Ensure the quality, consistency and business value of the second line of defence’s deliverables, including conducting reviews, challenges and quality assurance of the risk positions.
• Maintain an integrated vision of the property and casualty insurance sector’s risks, diagnose priority issues and prioritize activities in line with the sector roadmap.
• Serve as an expert point of reference for assigning, coordinating and guiding files, and contribute to team member development through knowledge transfer and feedback.
• Represent the risk management function within various committees, bodies, and strategic projects related to property and casualty insurance, by providing a critical perspective and recognized expertise on the sector’s operational risk issues.
• Actively assist with efforts to update operational risk management practices, processes, tools and methodologies, taking into account considerations specific to the property and casualty insurance sector.

What you bring to the table

• Bachelor’s degree in actuarial science, business administration, finance, accounting, risk management or any other relevant field
• A minimum of eight years of relevant experience, including significant experience in the property and casualty insurance sector
• Please note that other combinations of qualifications and relevant experience may be considered
• Experience steering complex files
• Experience in operational risk management, including knowledge of risk management methodologies, frameworks and tools
• Advanced proficiency in written and spoken French
• Advanced proficiency of English due to the nature of the duties or work tools or because the position involves interactions with English-speaking partners, members and/or clients
• Demonstrated expertise in property and casualty insurance, including an in-depth understanding of products, processes and operational issues
• Expertise in performing analyses, writing and giving presentations at the executive level
• Knowledge of a financial institution’s business activities and operations
