About the role: 

Gartner Analysts are industry thought leaders who create must-have insights, market predictions and best practices for a broad range of world-leading organizations. A Senior Director serves as a leader within Gartner’s Business and Technology Insights (BTI) group, establishing oneself as a credible voice within their designated market at local, regional and global levels. Utilizing exceptional research and analytical skills, a Senior Director plays a significant role in producing pragmatic and provocative insights which Gartner clients consume and apply to propel their business toward key objectives. They are a trusted source of advice for clients, reinforcing Gartner’s value every day by engaging them via in-person meetings, virtual meetings, sales support visits and Gartner conferences to discuss complex client challenges and offer appropriate recommendations.  

CIOs are navigating a period of unprecedented complexity in technology investment decisions. The growth of cloud, AI, consumption-based technology services, and the shift from project-based funding to ongoing product and platform investments have fundamentally changed how technology costs are incurred, governed and measured. As technology finance evolves from a cost management discipline to a strategic enabler of technology investment decisions and business value, Gartner is seeking a leader who can help shape the future agenda for CIOs and their teams across technology budgeting, spend transparency, cost optimization, cloud and AI economics, and value-focused governance. 

Important: This is not a corporate FP&A position. The role focuses on advising CIOs on IT Financial Management (ITFM), including technology budgeting, investment governance, cost transparency, cloud and AI economics, and technology value realization. Candidates should bring experience supporting CIO organizations and applying ITFM, TBM, or FinOps practices to improve decision-making and business outcomes. General FP&A backgrounds without technology-specific finance experience will not be considered. 

Your experience will ideally come from working closely with CIOs, including: 

• Experience leading or advising IT Financial Management disciplines, including technology budgeting, cost transparency, benchmarking, service costing, strategic cost management, and cloud/AI spend governance. 

• Understanding of the ITFM, TBM and FinOps technology landscape, including experience evaluating relevant vendors and solutions. 

• Demonstrated expertise in the economic and governance implications of cloud and AI, including unit economics, consumption-based pricing, FinOps practices, and the impact of vendor pricing changes on CIO investment decisions and value realization. 

What you will do:  

• Create innovative, thought provoking, and highly leveraged “must-have insights” content 

• Develop new insights and ideas through thought leadership and offer compelling, actionable approaches to client's needs and requests that accelerate the client's ability to act 

• Develop in-depth analysis to identify the root cause of a client’s barriers or overall needs and reframe thinking to drive strategy forward  

• Demonstrate thought leadership in establishing Insights positions across a team of analysts 

• Bring provocative, independent insights to Gartner leaders that can evolve the course of a research agenda 

• Research, analyze and predict market trends and shifts to provide clients and vendors with actionable insights  

• Provide clients and prospects with actionable advice aligned to their designated content area via virtual or face-to-face interactions  

• Create and deliver high value presentation materials on and off stage for Gartner events, industry and professional association conferences, and client briefings  

• Support BTI and Sales: Provide sales support serving as voice of the market to help Insights teams create content and to drive engagement with clients to make progress against their critical priorities to grow their business 

• Provide high quality and timely content peer review 

• Build credibility as an industry expert to represent Gartner insights, methodology and strategy  

• Actively participate in innovation, ideation, and research discussions and collaborate effectively with peers in the Insights community 

• Identify research process improvements or develop new processes that help the team and BTI provide excellent service delivery 

• Be a mentor and a coach by supporting more junior team members 

• Be client-centric while actively seeking to help clients engage regularly and often with Gartner insights and interactions 

• Serve as a recognized authority on Technology Cost and Value Management, helping CIOs establish effective approaches to technology budgeting, investment governance, cost transparency, and value realization across the enterprise.  

• Develop and communicate strong positions on emerging and leading practices in IT Financial Management, cloud and AI economics, and technology investment optimization that enable better business outcomes. 

What you will need:  

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience; Graduate degree preferred 

• 12+ years of relevant field or industry experience 

• 12+ years of relevant experience in technology finance, IT Financial Management (ITFM), Technology Business Management (TBM), FinOps, technology strategy, or related leadership roles 

• Experience supporting CIOs, technology leaders, or IT organizations in budgeting, investment governance, cost transparency, and technology value management 

• Demonstrated expertise in modern technology cost structures, including infrastructure, applications, platforms, cloud, AI, and product-based delivery models 

• Experience applying ITFM, TBM, FinOps, or related practices to improve technology investment decision-making and business outcomes 

• Experience with, or advising organizations on, leading ITFM, TBM, or FinOps platforms and the associated vendor landscape..Add content-specific expertise needed, remove highlight

• Deep knowledge of the global and competitive landscape within subject area as well as the interplay in that market 

• Ability to work independently, while also being intrinsically motivated to collaborate across teams and support the workflow of others, in a multicultural global team 

• Learning agile and adept with navigating highly matrixed environments 

• Ability to represent Gartner's research methodology and strategies effectively at all levels 

• Willingness and ability to travel up to 25% (where applicable) 

Subject Expertise 

• Deep understanding of modern IT Financial Management, including budgeting, cost transparency, benchmarking, service costing, TBM-style cost models, allocation, chargeback/showback, and strategic cost management. 

• Demonstrated ability to form independent viewpoints on emerging trends and practices in Technology Cost and Value Management and translate those viewpoints into actionable guidance for CIOs. 

• Expertise in technology investment governance and the connection between technology spend and business value realization. 

• Understanding of cloud and AI economics, including consumption-based pricing models, unit economics, FinOps practices, and emerging governance considerations. 

• Knowledge of accounting and financial management principles as applied to technology organizations, including cost structures, cost centers, capital and operating expenditure, and funding models. 

• Familiarity with leading ITFM, TBM, and FinOps platforms and the evolving vendor landscape. 

• Experience advising on or leading cost optimization, spend governance, and technology investment decision-making initiatives. 

Demonstrated expertise in at least two of the following:  

• Governing AI and GenAI investments, consumption, and value realization 
• Technology value management and value realization 
• The shift from project-based funding to product and platform operating models 
• Cloud financial management and FinOps 
• IT Asset Management (ITAM), IT Service Management (ITSM), or adjacent technology management disciplines 
• Technology benchmarking, cost transparency, and performance measurement

Gartner believes in fair and equitable pay. A reasonable estimate of the base salary range for this role is 172,000 USD - 202,500 USD. Please note that actual salaries may vary within the range, or be above or below the range, based on factors including, but not limited to, education, training, experience, professional achievement, business need, and location. In addition to base salary, employees will participate in either an annual bonus plan based on company and individual performance, or a role-based, uncapped sales incentive plan.
