Staff Software Engineer/ArcGIS

The Hartford’sCorporate IT organization isseekinga highly motivated, detail‑oriented Software Engineer to join Enterprise Risk Management IT (ERMIT) as part of the GIS team. This role’s primary responsibilities are the ownership, administration, stability, security, and ongoing operation of the enterprise ArcGIS platform, supporting critical underwriting, claims, and risk management capabilities across the firm.The position emphasizes end‑to‑end accountability for ArcGIS Enterprise system administration, cloud‑hosted infrastructure, enterprise geodatabases, and automated data and ETL workflows. The successful candidate will own andoperateplatform components hosted in AWS, spanning both Windows and Linux environments, and willbe responsible fordriving platform stability, security, scalability, and operational excellence.This role requires strong engineering fundamentals,anAI mindset,deep hands‑on experience with Esri technologies, and the ability to independently manage, evolve, and harden GIS platforms and data pipelines with minimal oversight. Candidates will work closely with peer engineering teams, database and infrastructure partners, and business stakeholders, providing technical leadership while adhering toestablishedstandards, operational processes, and security practices.

Responsibilities: 

• OwnandoperatetheArcGIS Enterpriseplatform(Portal, Server, Data Store)for The Hartford

• Supportthe underlying ArcGISplatformWindows infrastructure, including installations, configurations (ArcGIS Portal, Server, Data Store, IIS, Web Adaptor, Tomcat & Java), server migrations, patch management, and upgrades. Monitor system performance, health, and availability. 

• Maintain enterprise geodatabases (Oracle, PostgreSQL), managing schema objectsandcontent updates, SDE connectivity, and ST Geometry configuration as well as Enterprise Geodatabaseupgrades

• Secure ArcGIS Enterprise content by applying industry best practices for data confidentiality, authentication, and integration with Active Directory/IWA/SAML

• Manage andmaintainArcGIS Enterprise backup and restore procedures ensuringsystem resiliency

• Create andmaintainspatial services using ArcGIS Pro projects and Python, including map,featureandgeoprocessing service publications

• ActivelyleverageAI technologies to improve deliverycycles and workflows

• DevelopPython and PowerShell scripts withArcPy, ArcGISPro Models to automate business and administrative tasks,analyticsanddata workflows (e.g., ArcGIS API for Python)

• Operateand troubleshoot automated spatial ETLworkflowpipelines

• ProvideTier-3escalationsupport for troubleshooting ArcGIS services, spatial applications, andGISdesktop

• Create andmaintaindocumentationincludingtechnical solutions, designs, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)andbest practices, and configuration guides for the platformsand workflowsto support maintainability and platform stability

Qualifications: 

• 3+years of experiencein software engineering andESRI/ArcGIS Administration

• In-depth knowledge of ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Pro, and their various components and licensing models

• Strong knowledge of Windows/Linux Server administration, IIS, networking, and security concepts

• Deep experience with relational databases hosting ArcGIS SDE Enterprise Geodatabase, specifically Oracle and PostgreSQLhostingas well asdatabase procedural development, including the use of ArcGIS ST Geometry functions for data management and spatial analysis

• Proficiencyin Python, Arcade, and PowerShell for workflows, geoprocessing, and administration automationas well as exposure todevelopment withAI tools such as Copilot and/or Amazon Q

• Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple changing priorities in a fast-paced environment

• Ability to work independentlywhilecollaborating effectivelywithin anAgile development team

• Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, Computer Science, or a related field, or comparable experience

Preferred Skills & Experience:

• Experience with SQL Serverand/or Snowflakedatabases

• Background in OOP with experience in Java and Spring BootandRESTful APIsbackend services

• Familiarity with CI/CD and DevOpstools (GitHub, Jenkins, SonarQube, etc.)

• Experience withAWScloudenvironmentsand migration of ArcGIS Enterprise platforms

• Experience with FME (Feature Manipulation Engine) Administration

• Esri Technical Certification or GISP (Certified GIS Professional)

• Ability to stay current on new Esri releases,technologiesand products, and understand their impacts to the application portfolio and business environment
