EY's State and Local Tax (SALT) team is a growing practice within the organization, and you'll see that growth reflected in your career. As a Tax Manager, you'll play an important role within a rapidly expanding team that has experienced significant recent growth and aims to double in size over the next few years. With support from some of the most engaging professionals in the business, you can expect to further develop your tax technical skills, leadership capabilities, and business experience. Advise on indirect tax regulatory changes; design strategies, operating models, processes, and compliance frameworks that raise efficiency and meet requirements. Identify opportunities for tax optimization, credits and refund recovery, exposure reduction; manage strategies, compliance, remediation, controversies, and corrective filings. Support process review and technology transformation.

• Translate regulatory changes into practical compliance and reporting solutions.
• Implement operating models and frameworks across the indirect tax lifecycle.
• Lead optimization, recovery, and exposure‑reduction initiatives.

Your key responsibilities

You'll likely spend most of your time on a diverse array of projects, responsibilities, and tasks. To support these efforts, we'll look to you to apply your extensive knowledge of state and local tax concepts and law. You can expect to be working in a highly collaborative culture, where listening to and sharing information with colleagues is an essential part of the role.

• Contributing to the overall success of the team by developing a thorough understanding of EY methodologies and tools
• Challenging traditional procedures and finding new approaches to address tax matters
• Building client relationships and demonstrating your knowledge of the financial services industry
• Staying abreast of state and local tax developments and emerging trends affecting the marketplace

Lead workstream delivery, track status and deliverables, and participate in client working sessions. Identify opportunities for additional services, contribute to RFPs, manage engagement economics, and implement resource plans and budgets. Guide teams, drive improvement, and recommend solutions by interpreting internal/external issues. Travel required regularly for external clients.

To qualify for the role, you must have

• Bachelor’s degree (4‑year degree) with an emphasis in accounting, finance, or economics
• Typically 4–6 years of relevant experience
• Strong tax technical skills including tax research and writing skills, flow through entity taxation, income and franchise taxes, transfer taxes, and compliance skills as it relates to multi-state jurisdictions
• Project management experience in delivering high-quality work products in a fast-paced environment
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Tax legislation and impact assessment.

Ideally, you’ll also have

• Experience in a professional services environment
• Experience leading workstreams across planning, execution, and closure.
• Practical management of engagement economics and resource planning.
• Daily participation in client working sessions and strong stakeholder management.

• We offer a comprehensive compensation and benefits package where you’ll be rewarded based on your performance and recognized for the value you bring to the business.  The base salary range for this job is: 
• • New York City, Boston, and Washington DC Metro Areas, Washington State, and Southern California offices – $126,100 to $210,100
  • Bay Area California offices – $131,400 to $218,900
  • All other offices locations in the US, including Sacramento – $105,100 to $192,600
• Individual salaries within these ranges are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge, skills and geography.  In addition, our Total Rewards package includes medical and dental coverage, pension and 401(k) plans, and a wide range of paid time off options.
• Under our flexible vacation policy, you’ll decide how much vacation time you need based on your own personal circumstances. You’ll also be granted time off for designated EY Paid Holidays, Winter/Summer breaks, Personal/Family Care, and other leaves of absence when needed to support your physical, financial, and emotional well-being.
