Nationwide Financial is seeking a talented and experienced Senior Actuary, Annuity Valuation to join the Annuity Valuation team. This role offers the opportunity to own and elevate important valuation processes across the full annuity product portfolio while delivering insights that support financial reporting, risk management, and business decisions. We are seeking an experienced actuary who can take ownership of critical work, build strong partnerships, and help advance the team’s capabilities across accounting bases.
About the Role
The Annuity Valuation team supports valuation, reporting, analysis, and business decision-making across all annuity products. The team’s work spans Statutory and US GAAP responsibilities, creating an opportunity for this position to contribute broadly across the valuation function.
You will work across the full annuity product portfolio, including variable annuities, RILA, fixed-indexed annuities, MYGA, SPIA, pension risk transfer, and other annuity products. You will partner with actuarial and business teams across Product, Pricing, Financial Reporting, Modeling, and related functions to analyze results, improve processes, and support evolving business and regulatory needs.
This is a hands-on people leadership role with direct reports. You will combine deep expertise in actuarial valuation with the ability to translate complex analysis into clear recommendations for Actuaries, Underwriting, Product, Finance and senior business leaders. You will guide and develop analytical professionals, including direct reports, and lead complex work across functions.
Key Responsibilities
- Own or oversee valuation and reporting processes across the annuity portfolio under applicable accounting bases, including Statutory and US GAAP/LDTI.
- Analyze reserves, capital, earnings emergence, product calculations, and other valuation drivers; translate results into clear insights and recommendations.
- Serve as a technical resource for assigned products or valuation processes and communicate findings to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Develop, maintain, test, and enhance actuarial valuation and projection models, tools, documentation, and controls.
- Partner with Financial Reporting, Modeling, Controllership, and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver accurate, consistent, and well-understood results.
- Identify and implement opportunities to improve efficiency, automation, transparency, control, and repeatability across valuation processes.
- Support financial reporting, management reporting, audit requests, and the analysis or implementation of emerging accounting and regulatory requirements.
- Provide technical leadership on special projects and broader initiatives affecting the annuity business.
Ideal Candidate
- FSA designation required.
- Typically eight or more years of actuarial experience, with deep experience in Statutory valuation, US GAAP/LDTI valuation, or both.
- Strong experience with annuity products such as variable annuities, RILA, fixed-indexed annuities, MYGA, SPIA, and pension risk transfer.
- Strong understanding of actuarial valuation, financial reporting, modeling, data, and related controls.
- Experience improving valuation processes, developing tools, or applying automation and technology to increase efficiency and reliability.
- Ability to take ownership of complex work, operate effectively in a changing environment, and navigate evolving accounting and regulatory requirements.
- Strong communication, relationship-building, and influencing skills, with the ability to explain technical results clearly and drive alignment across stakeholders.
- Curiosity and adaptability to expand expertise across valuation disciplines and support the broader needs of the team.

Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
Provides strategic direction and knowledge for the compilation, categorization and analysis of data and financial reporting and analysis.
Constructs sophisticated testing tools and analyzes product calculations.
Leads, provides expertise and builds strategies for pricing and implementation of products.
Constructs, maintains and completes Actuarial, Projection & Valuation Models.
Analyzes risks and reinsurance for lines of business.
Establishes reserves and other valuation items under multiple accounting regimes (statutory, GAAP and tax) for products.
Builds cohesive presentations, communication strategies and recommendations of actuarial findings that are suitable for technical and non-technical audiences at the OCFO leadership level.
May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Reporting Relationships: Reports to Actuarial leader.
Typical Skills and Experiences:
Education: Undergraduate degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics or similar background requiring modeling, programming, or quantitative analysis.
License/Certification/Designation: FSA required. PLEASE REFER TO THE NATIONWIDE LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY ACTUARIAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
Experience: Typically, at least eight years of actuarial experience.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Experienced knowledge of actuarial business functions, statistical methods of analysis, actuarial models, actuarial software and databases; knowledge of company operations, products, systems and actuarial methodologies. Knowledge of industry and regulatory practices is vital. Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (including VBA within Access and Excel), analytical software (such as tableau) and programming languages. Proficient level of organizational agility, influencing skills, strategic agility, inspiring others, business perspective and accounting. Mastery level of perspective, problem solving, customer focus, dealing with ambiguity, drive for results, analysis, learning.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, capabilities and experiences may take precedence.
