Senior, Indirect Tax - Premium Tax

As a Premium Tax professional, you will support insurance premium tax compliance activities across multiple jurisdictions. You will apply premium tax technical knowledge, use Premium Pro compliance software, and collaborate with clients and internal teams to deliver accurate, timely, and high-quality work.

Work you’ll do

As a Senior in Premium Tax, you’ll help insurance clients manage premium tax obligations, reduce compliance risk, and improve the efficiency of their tax operations. Your combination of technical knowledge, technology experience, and attention to detail will contribute directly to high-quality client delivery.

Responsibilities include

• Preparing, reviewing, and filing insurance premium tax returns.
• Calculating premium taxes, assessments, fees, and related payments.
• Using Premium Pro to prepare filings, manage compliance data, and generate reports.
• Reconciling tax workpapers to financial, policy, and premium data.
• Researching premium tax rules, filing requirements, exemptions, credits, and apportionment matters.
• Monitoring filing calendars and managing competing deadlines.
• Responding to tax authority notices and information requests.
• Preparing well-organized workpapers supporting calculations and filing positions.
• Identifying data issues, compliance risks, and process improvements.
• Collaborating with clients, tax professionals, accounting teams, and engagement leaders.
• Supporting premium tax audits, special projects, technology implementations, and process improvement initiatives.

The Team:

Our Indirect Tax team, collectively has significant experience with the requirements and nuances of jurisdictions in all 50 states. Our specific services include state income and franchise tax, indirect tax, business restructuring, credits and incentives, sales and use tax outsourcing, excise tax, property tax, state strategic tax review, and state tax controversy.

You will join a tax team supporting insurance organizations with premium tax compliance, technical research, reporting, and process improvement. The team works across jurisdictions and disciplines to help clients manage complex compliance requirements and improve the quality and efficiency of their tax processes.

Qualifications

Required:

• Ability to perform job responsibilities within a hybrid work model that requires US Tax professionals to co-locate in person 2 – 3 days per week
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, Business, or a related field
• 3+ years of experience in insurance premium tax compliance or a related tax function Hands-on experience using Premium Pro.
• Working knowledge of premium tax compliance processes and filing requirements.
• Strong analytical, research, reconciliation, and problem-solving skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
• Ability to manage multiple deadlines while maintaining accuracy.
• Limited immigration sponsorship may be available
• Ability to travel 10%, on average based on the work you do and the clients and industries/sectors you serve
• One of the following active accreditations obtained, in process of willing and able to obtain:
  • Licensed CPA in state of practice/primary office if eligible to sit for the CPA
  • If not CPA eligible:
  • Licensed attorney
  • Enrolled Agent

 Preferred

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience with multi-state or multi-jurisdiction premium tax filings.
• Familiarity with insurance accounting, written premiums, admitted and non-admitted business, or surplus lines.
• Experience responding to taxing authority notices or supporting premium tax audits.
• CPA, insurance tax certification, or progress toward a relevant credential.
• Experience improving compliance processes or implementing tax technology.

The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled. At Deloitte, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $74,925 to $153,000.

You may also be eligible to participate in a discretionary annual incentive program, subject to the rules governing the program, whereby an award, if any, depends on various factors, including, without limitation, individual and organizational performance.
