Deloitte’s Washington National Tax (WNT) Private Wealth Tax Controversy practice is seeking experienced professionals to provide technical advice and strategic support to Deloitte practitioners and their private wealth clients (high-net-worth individuals, their businesses, family offices, foundations, and investment entities) addressing complex federal tax controversies. In this role, you will support Internal Revenue Service (IRS) practice and procedure and private wealth tax controversy matters while building technical, writing, and client-service capabilities within an integrated national practice. Work you'll do
As a Manager, Tax Services on the WNT Private Wealth Tax Controversy team, you will be responsible for…
- Leading research and analysis of the Internal Revenue Code, regulations, administrative guidance, and judicial authorities applicable to federal tax controversy matters
- Representing private wealth clients at various levels of IRS controversy, including examination and appeals
- Formulating controversy strategies and drafting or reviewing responses to IRS information requests, notices of proposed adjustment, protests, refund claims, and other persuasive submissions
- Advising Deloitte practice teams on IRS practice and procedure matters, including statutes of limitations, penalties, partnership audit rules, confidentiality and privilege, and reporting and disclosure matters
- Supporting private wealth tax controversy and service-center matters through strategy development, technical analysis, and written submissions
- Developing tax alerts, presentation materials, national training content, articles, and technical resources addressing significant legislative, administrative, and judicial developments
- Leading practice initiatives, coordinating emerging issues, supporting leadership meetings and training, and mentoring junior professionals

Deloitte Tax’s WNT professionals offer unique insight into the many factors affecting taxation, from the tax policies that drive federal tax legislation, to understanding the technical nuances that may create compliance exposure. Professionals in the WNT practice are a select group of specialists whose knowledge, skills, and experience are integral to understanding technical issues. Deloitte Tax’s WNT professionals work closely with the local office tax professionals and clients to evaluate complicated issues and help manage risk in today’s increasingly sophisticated business world.
The Private Wealth Tax Controversy team can assist clients with IRS interactions during the tax examination life cycle, from pre-filing through post-appeals, as well as return processing, account analysis, and interest computation. Our specialists are highly experienced in IRS policies, procedures, and examination approaches. The team includes former IRS officials, industry tax executives, and former government litigators.
Required:
- Ability to perform job responsibilities within a hybrid work model that requires US Tax professionals to co-locate in person 2 – 3 days per week
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field
- At least 4+ years of tax experience, preferably representing clients in federal tax controversies or representing the government in federal tax matters
- Limited immigration sponsorship may be available
- Ability to travel up to 10%, based on the work you do and the clients and industries/sectors you serve
- One of the following active accreditations obtained:
- Licensed CPA in state of practice/primary office if eligible to sit for the CPA exam
- If not CPA eligible:
- Licensed attorney
- Enrolled agent
Preferred:
- An advanced degree such as MS in Taxation, JD and/or LLM
- Strong understanding of IRS operations, its procedures and its processes
- Excellent communication, public speaking, research and writing skills required
- Experience with developing, mentoring and counseling staff level team members
The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled. At Deloitte, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $156,975 to $261,625.
You may also be eligible to participate in a discretionary annual incentive program, subject to the rules governing the program, whereby an award, if any, depends on various factors, including, without limitation, individual and organizational performance.
