Engineering Manager, Catalog Integration
Netflix · Los Gatos, United States · 1d ago
At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology. Come be a part of what’s next.
The Title and Launch Management (TLM) team is responsible for building and innovating the technology foundations that enable the ingest, setup, launch, and global distribution of all types of entertainment on Netflix—including series, movies, games, ads, live events, trailers, and more. TLM acts as the bridge between the title creation lifecycle and the consumer experience, ensuring that launching titles on Netflix is efficient, flexible, accurate, and scalable. Our team's goal is to make launching titles as seamless as possible, supporting both operational and creative needs across the company.
The Catalog Integration team turns the outputs of many independent content workflows into a coherent catalog that other systems can use. Partner teams create the artwork, language assets, ratings, descriptions, trailers, and other information that surrounds a title; Catalog Integration provides the federated data API and transformation layer that bring those outputs together, connects them into the catalog graph, and transforms them into a consistent view.
We publish the real-time feeds that unblock every downstream, member-facing system — the moment our feeds go out, hundreds of services spring into action to serve that update to members. We invest in proprietary, cutting-edge tooling for data snapshots, recovery, graph-aware rollbacks, fast/override publication lanes, and realtime overrides, so that one bad entry never holds up the rest of the catalog. Our work enables Netflix's cutting edge business bets like Live, Games, and Sports while continuing to deliver the critical data that drives the streaming video content experience.
What you will do
You will lead a team of software engineers to deliver high-impact results. Your responsibilities in this role:
- Own the reliability and timeliness of the real-time catalog feeds and publication pipeline that unblock every downstream, member-facing system, including the fast lanes and override lanes that keep a bad entry from holding up the rest of the catalog
- Own Catalog Entity, our shared content modeling abstraction, evolving it to represent common structure and content-type-specific variation across films, episodic series, live shows, sports, and future content types without requiring a bespoke pipeline for each
- Own the data integrity of the catalog: validate collected data against the model and business logic, hold back or override bad changes, and detect and remediate systemic feed failures
- Partner with peer teams on setup-side object modeling and on the downstream member-facing contract
- Lead collaboration with engineers, program managers, product managers, and other stakeholders to drive vision, strategy, and adoption
- Foster a culture of accountability, ensuring timely and reliable delivery of the team's roadmap to support business needs
- Act as a trusted technical advisor, guiding thoughtful decision-making in ambiguous situations
- Communicate complex ideas clearly and influence decisions among diverse stakeholders
- Balance business goals with strong engineering practices, investing in foundational work and continuous improvements
- Hire, coach, and lead a team of engineers with deep data modeling and distributed systems expertise, inspiring exceptional results in stability, performance, and product experience
- Build an inclusive team culture where everyone feels empowered, accepted, and respected
What we are looking for
- 3 or more years building and managing high-performing, inclusive teams, attracting top talent, fostering accountability, and ensuring all voices inform decisions.
- Experience delivering and operating high-performance data pipelines with near-real-time latency, balanced with consistency and partition tolerance, behind production internet consumer-scale workloads
- Experience driving a culture of excellence, unlocking high-velocity business and product results while cultivating an ownership culture with best-in-breed systems reliability and operational readiness.
- Proven ability to define and communicate systems strategy to drive long-term product feature enablement.
- Skilled at prioritizing team efforts, aligning them with business objectives, and using data, input, and pilot investments to bring rigor to decision-making.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills to build cross-functional partnerships, influence strategic direction, and empower team members across global teams.
Nice to have
- Experience building generative AI solutions in ambiguous environments, with a proven ability to creatively experiment, develop innovative approaches, and collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams.
- Experience leading engineering teams supporting large-scale data pipelines updating in the 10M+ updates/second regime
- Experience with in-memory data snapshot architectures, point-in-time consistency, or graph-aware rollback/recovery systems
- Experience leading the operation and optimization of CPU- and memory-intensive cloud services in the range of 1,000s to 10,000s of CPUss
