Principal Platform Software Engineer
Oracle · Nashville, United States · 1d ago
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) delivers mission-critical cloud services for leading enterprises around the world. OCI provides hyperscale, multi-tenant services across a global cloud footprint and continues to expand across dedicated, hybrid, multicloud, edge, data, and AI capabilities.
We are building the Molecular Platform: cloud capabilities that help scientific and enterprise customers manage complex data, workflows, and related services. The team is developing initial capabilities with strategic customers and evolving them into reusable OCI platform offerings.
We are seeking a Principal Software Developer to design and deliver foundational Molecular Platform services. This is a senior individual-contributor role for an engineer who can own substantial technical areas, make sound architecture and implementation decisions, and move quickly from customer needs to reliable cloud capabilities. You will partner closely with product management, applied science, customer-facing teams, and OCI engineering organizations.
What You’ll Do
Own the technical design and delivery of key Molecular Platform services, APIs, data pipelines, workflow capabilities, integrations, and operational tooling.
Design scalable, secure, and reliable cloud services for scientific and enterprise data, including data ingestion, normalization, metadata, processing, workflow execution, and lifecycle management.
Translate ambiguous customer workflows and product needs into clear technical designs, well-sequenced delivery plans, and durable platform capabilities.
Build reusable integration patterns for data sources, scientific applications, workflow systems, AI-enabled services, and OCI platform services.
Design for multi-tenant isolation, identity and access control, auditability, data protection, observability, failure handling, and operational readiness.
Establish the events, metrics, logs, and telemetry needed to support monitoring, troubleshooting, capacity planning, and product decisions.
Drive rapid pilot delivery while maintaining modular designs that can support additional customers, use cases, data types, and workflows over time.
Lead design reviews, provide technical guidance to other engineers, and raise standards for code quality, testing, reliability, security, and documentation.
Work directly with product managers and customers to investigate feedback, resolve technical risks, and continuously improve the service.
What You’ll Bring
6+ years of professional software-development experience building and operating production services or platform capabilities.
Strong programming experience in one or more languages such as Java, Go, Python, C++, C#, or similar.
Experience building distributed systems, backend services, cloud-native applications, or large-scale data-processing systems.
Ability to independently own moderately complex components or features from technical design through production operation.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-moving environment, manage shifting priorities, and make sound engineering decisions with incomplete information.
Strong collaboration and communication skills, including experience working closely with product managers, customers, or partner engineering teams.
Hands-on experience in at least one of the following areas:
Data platforms or data engineering, including ingestion, storage, processing, streaming, orchestration, or governance
IoT platforms, device connectivity, edge-to-cloud systems, telemetry, or fleet-scale operations
AI/ML platforms, model training, model evaluation or harnesses, model serving, RAG, AI agents, or Model Context Protocol (MCP)
Familiarity with cloud infrastructure, APIs, containers, CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, observability, and service operations.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Responsibilities
Technical Leadership and Delivery
Define service architecture and technical designs for owned Molecular Platform capabilities.
Deliver production-quality services, APIs, integrations, data-processing components, and automated tests.
Lead technical investigations and resolve complex design, performance, reliability, and integration issues.
Mentor engineers through design reviews, code reviews, debugging, and sound engineering practices.
Customer and Product Partnership
Work closely with product management and strategic customers to understand workflows, technical constraints, and desired outcomes.
Translate customer feedback into platform improvements and durable product capabilities.
Make clear trade-offs between immediate pilot needs and the longer-term reusable platform architecture.
Reliability, Security, and Operations
Establish appropriate logging, metrics, tracing, health checks, alerts, and operational runbooks for owned services.
Design services with strong identity and access controls, tenant isolation, data protection, auditability, and secure-by-default practices.
Lead improvements to deployment automation, test coverage, resilience, performance, and operational readiness.
Support investigation of significant service issues and drive durable corrective actions.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with OCI, AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, or another cloud platform.
Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, microservices, distributed data systems, event-driven architecture, or service orchestration.
Experience with scientific data platforms, life-sciences data, laboratory informatics, research workflows, or regulated data environments.
Experience with AI/ML platforms, model training or serving, RAG, evaluation harnesses, AI agents, MCP, or enterprise AI integrations.
Familiarity with data governance, metadata and lineage, policy enforcement, privacy controls, or compliance requirements for enterprise data.
Experience building new platform capabilities in a fast-moving environment where early customer requirements evolve rapidly.
Certain U.S. based or U.S. customer or client-facing roles may be required to comply with applicable requirements, such as immunization/occupational health mandates, and/or drug testing requirements.
