About The Role
Are you passionate about making a difference in the health and human services sector? Do you thrive in a dynamic, agile environment? If so, FTI Consulting is the place for you.
Work alongside hospital clinical and operational teams, where care is delivered, to improve how services run and make changes that last.
FTI Consulting is seeking a Senior Consultant to join our growing Health team in Sydney. We work with public, private and not-for-profit health organisations to improve service delivery, operational performance and outcomes. As a specialised consulting firm, we offer a unique environment that combines the agility of a small firm with the depth of industry expertise you’d expect from larger consultancies.
This role focuses on hospital operations and improvement. Our work includes:
• improving how services operate, for example patient flow and access to care across emergency departments, inpatient wards, theatres and outpatients
• matching workforce and capacity to demand, for example aligning staffing and rosters with patient activity, or improving how beds and theatre time are planned and used
• redesigning processes and ways of working
• strengthening the management routines and improvement capability that help teams sustain progress.
You'll work with clinicians, managers and executives to understand how services operate, identify opportunities and implement practical improvements. You'll own defined pieces of work, with support and coaching from experienced colleagues. You'll also be part of our broader health consulting practice, with opportunities to contribute to related engagements as your interests develop.
FTI Consulting offers the depth, resources and professional standards of a global firm, combined with the focus and hands-on senior support of a dedicated health and human services team.
This is an opportunity to build your consulting career while contributing to projects that improve outcomes for communities, clients and service users.
What You’ll Do
As a key member of our team, you will support complex projects across the This is demanding and rewarding work. Hospitals are busy, complex and often under pressure. Problems rarely arrive well defined, priorities shift, and clear direction isn't always available. You'll often need to work out the way forward yourself, bring structure to the problem and keep things moving. Not everyone welcomes change at first, so you'll need to build credibility, stay steady under pressure and keep people engaged. In return, you'll see the difference your work makes for patients and staff.
We work side by side with our clients, so expect to spend much of your week on client sites, often three to four days depending on the engagement. Some domestic travel may be required.
Responsibilities will include:
• Spend time with clinical and operational teams to understand how services run, observe day-to-day processes and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Bring together operational data, staff perspectives and observations to define problems and develop practical recommendations.
• Help teams design, test and implement changes, track results, and establish routines for reviewing performance and following through on actions.
• Facilitate workshops and working sessions that draw on staff expertise, build improvement skills and help teams agree priorities and next steps.
• Take responsibility for defined pieces of project work, shaping the approach, coordinating activities and keeping progress on track.
• Produce clear, well-structured analysis, presentations and reports that support decisions and action.
• Contribute to proposals, case studies and the development of our team's methods and tools.

What You'll Need to Succeed
You'll have at least two years (no more than 6 years) of relevant experience in consulting, project delivery, hospital operations or improvement. We welcome candidates with more experience who are interested in the scope and responsibilities of a Senior Consultant role.
Experience working in or with hospitals is essential, including a practical understanding of clinical and operational service delivery. You may have gained this in a consulting firm serving health clients, or in an operational, service improvement or project role within a health service. A clinical background is valuable when combined with experience delivering service change or improvement.
We're looking for evidence of:
• Practical improvement experience: contributing to changes in how services operate, for example in patient flow, access, workforce, capacity, service redesign or operational performance.
• Structured problem-solving: breaking down complex, loosely defined problems, using quantitative and qualitative information, and translating findings into practical action.
• Comfort with ambiguity: finding a way forward when direction or structure isn't clear, adapting as things change, and staying resilient under pressure.
• Influence and relationships: building trust and credibility with clinical and operational teams, listening carefully, working through scepticism and influencing without formal authority.
• Delivery and ownership: taking responsibility for a defined piece of work, managing priorities and following through with appropriate support.
• Clear communication: structuring and writing concise presentations and documents that tell a clear story, and helping groups work through problems and decisions.
• Comfort with data: using operational data in Excel to understand what's happening and support recommendations. You don't need to be a data specialist, and experience with tools such as Power BI is welcome but not essential.
Consulting experience is desirable but not essential. Curiosity, openness to feedback and a willingness to learn are important, as is a practical, collaborative approach to making improvements in complex health service environments.
A relevant degree or equivalent professional experience is required.
